Lakeland Florida is a city of around 100,000 people depending on your source. Lakeland FL is located about 50 miles from downtown Orlando Florida and 33 miles from downtown Tampa Florida. Is it the city for you? Let's take a look and see.
Lakeland is the largest city in Polk County Florida. It is actually the furthest west of any city in Polk County. The road at the furthest western part of the city runs north and south. The name of that road is County Line Road. Polk County is not famous for having great schools. However many famous and successful people have and will graduate from the public school system here. Polk County is famous for being affordable, having an incredible climate, lots of beautiful lakes and countryside.
The county seat, or the location of the county's governmental structure is in Bartow Florida. Bartow is about 12 miles southeast of downtown Lakeland and actually borders Highland City which most of us just consider to be Lakeland Florida. US-98 connects the two cities and it literally takes minutes to get from downtown Lakeland to Bartow.
The downtown area of Lakeland Florida is located just south of Interstate-4. Since most people would consider downtown to be where the high-rise buildings and offices are that is what area I will describe. The downtown area is located between 5 lakes. After all this is Lakeland and it only seem appropriate. Those lakes seem to be shaped in a star formation and encircle the heart of the city. They are Lake Wire at 12 o'clock and going clockwise Lake Mirror, Lake Morton, Lake Hunter and Lake Beulah.
This is where you will find many of the government buildings, utility companies and some of the best restaurants. The focal point of the downtown area is no doubt the Frances Langford Promenade around Lake Mirror. The north side of Lake Mirror is also the local Amtrak and Greyhound Bus Station. The photo at the top of the page is Lake Mirror.
Lakeland Regional Health is the city's main hospital. It is located north of US-92 off of Lakeland Hills Blvd. Most of the medical industry here is located close to or on FL-37 as you near the center of the city from the north or south. The Watson Clinic also has a very strong presence here with locations dispersed around the city. A new clinic recently opened in South Lakeland which is very nice. You can rest assured that if you are in Lakeland you are close to medical assistance for any need.
Lakeland FL definitely has some colleges in the city. here is a brief list of what is available. Everest University, Florida Polytechnic, Florida Southern, Florida technical, Keiser University, Polk State College, Southern University, Webster University and Whitefield Theological Seminary.
Polk State College is near US-98 on the southeast side of the city while Florida Southern College probably has the nicest campus in the area. It is located on the north side of Lake Hollingsworth and is somewhat famous for it's architecture. Overlooking a large beautiful lake does not hurt.
Lakeland has 6 Public High Schools. I will not mention the private, charter or magnet schools. All of these schools are far superior to the one that I went to. I will admit a certain amount of disdain for the way they are rated in several of the online rating sites. Some great children become great young adults and graduate from these schools.
A word to the wise about school zones. They can change and calling Polk County is the best way to confirm the school zones. Also ask about scheduled re-zoning in areas like Lakeland that are growing rapidly. If the school zones are important to you. Their number is 863-534-0500. Click here to view their website. Two things that go together are baseball's spring training and central Florida weather. Thankfully the Publix Supermarket and it's founders liked baseball and ultimately settled here in Lakeland Florida.
Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium is located on the west side of Lake Parker. As you can see in the photo above this is where the Detroit Tigers hold their spring training. Spring Training normally begins late in February and this is likely the largest single sports attraction in Lakeland. However many other sports have semipro teams in the Lakeland area.
There are 21 golf courses with 9 holes or more within a 10 mile radius of downtown Lakeland Florida. That is a lot of golf to choose from even though I'm sure people have their favorites. They are all way to hard for me.
Since there are so many community tennis courts and clubs in the area I will focus on the one named Lakeland. The Lakeland or Beerman Tennis Club is located next to the Common Ground Children's Park. There is plenty of parking and 18 tennis courts. Both are about 1/3 of a mile south of Lake Hollingsworth. One word of advice. The traffic on E Edgewood Drive can be rather inconvenient so be cautious and considerate when leaving or turning into the parks.
Although we still have not scratched the surface you have to admit this all sounds great. Lakeland is a beautiful city with a lot to do if you choose to get out there and take part. If not hopefully you have an incredible home in one of our communities. Then you can still enjoy the weather and the fact we have no state income tax in Florida. Hopefully soon I will be assisting you with a house for sale right here in good ole Lakeland FL.
